Present simple negative

We use do or does + not to make negative forms of the present simple tense. The verb does is used in the third person singular (he, she, it).

There are two forms of the negative in English: full forms and short forms. Compare the following examples.

Full forms:

I do not know what to do.
You do not do you homework.
He/she/it does not work.
We do not eat sushi.
They do not live in Milan.

Short forms:

I don't know what to do.
You don't do you homework.
He/she/it doesn't work.
We don't eat sushi.
They don't live in Milan.

We usually use full forms in formal English and short forms in informal English, especially in spoken English. But we can use the full forms in spoken English, too, when we want to put stress on not.

Compare:

You do not do your homework. (Your criticism is stronger.)
You don't do your homework. (Your criticism is not so strong.)

Note:
Negative forms of the verb to be are made in a different way.
