Present continuous negative

We make negative forms of the present continuous tense by adding 'not' after the present simple forms of the verb 'to be'. We use full forms in formal English and short forms in informal English.

  • Examples of full forms:

I am not doing my English homework now.
You are not playing very well today.
Derek is not sleeping anymore.
We are not staying at the same hotel this year.
Simon and Judith are not sitting on the bus.

  • Examples of full forms:

I'm not doing my English homework now.
You aren't playing (You're not playing) very well today.
Derek isn't sleeping (He's not sleeping) anymore.
We aren't staying (We're not staying) at the same hotel this year.
Simon and Judith aren't sitting (They're not sitting) on the bus.
